Lead Pastor

I grew up in Atlanta, GA, and when I was a Junior in high school, my best friend invited me to attend a weekly Bible study. Now, to be completely honest, the only reason I agreed to go was because a lot of girls also attended. Even so, over the next several months, I became convinced that God was real, desired a relationship with me, and made this relationship possible by sending His son to die on a cross so that His death could be payment for my sin.
Within six months of being saved, I began to sense God calling me to switch from Electrical Engineering to ministry, and by my Junior year at The Georgia Institute of Technology, I knew God wanted me to serve in full-time ministry. So after Ga. Tech, I obtained a Masters of Divinity from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Chicago, IL and a Ph.D. in New Testament at The Southern Baptist Theological Divinity school in Louisville, KY.

Kelly and I met during college, and I knew she was the find of a lifetime. We were married during my time at Trinity, and, since then, I have found that she is a wonderful ministry partner, a pastor’s wife at heart, and loves serving in areas involving discipleship, mentoring women, women’s ministries, outreach, visitation, and serving as a greeter. We have three children: Andrew, Jonathan, and Brianna.

Over the years, I have enjoyed various ministry positions including church planter with the Southern Baptist Home Mission Board, Youth Pastor, Discipleship Pastor, Singles & Education Pastor, and Senior Pastor.

Mary Dowden - Children's Director
Mary Dowden
Children’s Director

mary.dowden@mulberrychurch.org

Mary Dowden has been a member of Mulberry Baptist Church since moving to Houma in 1992. Mary grew up in Slidell, LA where she met and married her high school sweetheart, Justin Dowden, in 1985. Mary is a graduate of Louisiana State University (B.S. Geology, 1985). She and Justin have four children – Logan, married to Chelsea; Julia, married to Patrick Mims; Jessica, and Cameron – and one grandchild.

Mary has spent many years actively pursuing a closer relationship with God and intentionally seeking to understand His plan for her life. It has been an extraordinary experience to see God at work in her life and directing her path. God has gifted both Mary and Justin with a great love and concern for children of all ages, and they often comment on the “love at first sight” effect that children have on them. Because of that love, Mary has served in Children’s Ministry at Mulberry Baptist Church in various ways since 1993, through VBS (Nursery, Preschool teacher, Grade School teacher, and Director), preschool choir, preschool and children’s Sunday School, TeamKID, and Awana. Each of these experiences has helped her to grow as a Christian, and has helped to prepare her for her position as Children’s minister, in which she has served since 2007.

Preschool Director - Tammy Gibson

Tammy Gibson

Preschool Director

I am a Christ-loving wife and mother of 5 beautiful children – Kylie, Nate, Alex, Emma, and Paxton! I am married to my husband, my rock, of almost ten years, Bryan Gibson. I am also a third grade teacher at Coteau Bayou Blue Elementary School, and I love making my students smile while mastering new skills!

I graduated from Nicholls State University in 2006 with my Bachelor’s degree in Sociology with a Family and Youth Advocacy Concentration. I later completed my teaching certification in 2017 becoming certified in K-6. God has placed a yearning desire in my heart to work with children, and so He has placed several opportunities along the way allowing me to do so. Before becoming a teacher, my focus was on leading a non-profit organization called CASA which advocates for the abused and neglected children in foster care. Most recently, I am excited to be part of a program filled with so much love for the preschool children of our church. From every warm greeting, to every heartfelt goodbye, it is evident that the members of our Preschool Department love what they do! I am blessed to be a part of it! When I’m not teaching or working with the Mulberry Preschool team, I love spending quiet afternoons with my family watching movies – (Who am I kidding? They’re never really quiet!) – or exploring the outdoors. Clark Creek has become an annual tradition for us!
There is a time and season for everything, and I am happy to start my season here at Mulberry. I am confident that God has strategically placed me in the right places beyond my comprehension.
“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens..” Ecclesiastes 3:1

Jourdan Despot - Student Intern

Jourdan Despot
Interim Youth Director

I am originally from Lafayette, LA and graduated from LSU with a Bachelor’s in Civil Engineering. After college, I spent 8 years working in the oil and gas industry as a facilities engineer, construction manager, and project manager for Chevron and other construction companies. These roles have allowed me the opportunity to live and work in numerous locations including Texas, Louisiana, Alberta Canada, and rotating to Western Australia.

During my time in Houston, I married my amazing wife, Megan, who is originally from Houma. After following the Lord’s calling from location to location with the oil industry, God called Megan and I back to Houma in 2015. That move led to many interesting steps along the journey of trusting the Lord and His plan for my life.

Along that journey, I made an exciting switch over the last year and a half to practice Commercial Real Estate with Logan Babin Real Estate. God was clearly involved and active in this big change for me, and He knew that I love working with youth. When the time came that I was needed to move from volunteering with the youth at Mulberry to serving as the Youth Director, my new career provided the flexibility to make this move.

My experience leading youth comes from my training and work as a Youth Leader for an international youth ministry program called Young Life. I am so blessed to have the opportunity to live in such a great community, be able to work in a career I have a passion for, and serve within the youth ministry that God has led me to here at Mulberry.
